2013 Syrah Estate
When I opened my first bottle of 2013 Estate Syrah I noticed the bottom of the cork had a thick dark color, smooth to the touch that reminded me of vintage ink. The wine itself is a dark inky magenta and blue/black. In the nose the aromas are primarily of savory herbs with a floral note of lilacs. Aromas of rosemary, oregano, bay leaf and lavender give an impression of Herbs de Provence (Syrah is also grown in the Provence region). The taste evokes memories of an English plum pudding with its candied fruit and baking spices of clove, mace and nutmeg. Fruit flavors of cherry, blackberry, blueberry and blood orange add complexity to this “pudding”. The tannins have softened enough to create a smooth finish that allows aromas of clove and cigar leaf tobacco to linger on the palate. The wine is delicious now, though, should you want to lay it down, this Syrah will hold for another eight to ten years.
